The British Home Office has announced that the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) offered by the Education Testing Services (ETS) will no longer be accepted for UK visa-granting purposes effective July 1st, 2014. Due to the discovery of a BBC programme — Panorama, which was broadcasted in February 2014 uncovered the fraudulent measures taken by candidates and authorized exam centres. The program sent an undercover student to sit in an ETS English Test and found there were “fake sitters” taking English exams on behalf of the registered candidates. Furthermore, the program also found invigilators were reading out answers of all 200 questions to the registered candidates during the multiple-choice exams. As a result, a two-hour test took only seven minutes to complete.
After the programme showed the findings of their undercover footage to the British authorities, the UK Council for International Student Affairs’ official website has announced that ETS will no longer provide TOEFL test for people who would like to use its result to support an UK immigration application.
