We are pleased to announce that 31 Boulevards is now one of the official agents for Discovery Summer in Hong Kong, Macau and Southern China. This summer school, currently ranked as the top multi-centre summer school in the UK by the British Council, offers short intensive summer courses at eight centres in England. Students receive three big benefits from the summer school: English skills from language specialists; take-home knowledge about the host country; and lots of personally engaged connections through fun activities with students from all around the world.

As testament to how popular these summer schools are, already more than a dozen students from Macau have registered for courses to be held at Radley College this summer.

Though most parents understand that involvement in their child’s language learning will help them academically, they feel anxious they do not know how to do this effectively. Cambridge English TV offers a range of solutions focusing on engagement and the roles within this of the teacher, young learners and their parents. The advice includes guidance on the Cambridge English Young Learners tests and supporting practical resources and ideas.

EFL expert Karen Saxby offers comment in four areas: 1. Why parents might want or not want to engage in their child’s language learning; 2. Rethinking why we learn languages; 3. How teachers can encourage parents to engage more; 4. Ways in which parents can help their children even if they have little English themselves. Karen explains that the four essentials of the teacher/parent role are: information, direction, caring and energizing, and that a parent triggers the intrinsic motivation that makes the learning experience fun and meaningful.

Workshops and conferences for IB teachers have consistently strengthened awareness of IB philosophy and the rationale behind the programme, along with developing invaluable skills for teaching.

These sources of professional development are also made available in online workshops to teachers employed in non-IB schools.

Led by experienced IB workshop leaders, teachers learn new strategies and share ideas with educators from around the world. Participants receive a certificate of completion for the workshops.

Examples of upcoming workshops from 23 March to 17 August:

Developing independent and collaborative learners

The focus of this workshop is to foster an internationally-minded approach

to teaching and learning. You learn how to adopt a "service learning" approach to teaching and learning which offers students opportunities to take action to become independent yet collaborative learners

Holistic teaching and learning

Learn what holistic learning and the whole student is in the IB context.

You will be encouraged to reflect on your own personal experiences as an educator as well as reflecting on those of other international educators.
